Ventilator Assisted Success
Tung Tung is a bright and vivacious 4-year-old girl, who suffers from a rare and complex neuromuscular disease. She had been staying at an intensive care unit for 20 months following an episode of severe pneumonia in April 2023, for which she eventually required a tracheostomy and became ventilator-dependent since. She was transferred to the Duchess of Kent Children’s Hospital at Sandy Bay
for carer training just before Christmas in 2024.
Tung Tung’s mother, who is her only available carer, needed to travel from Kowloon to the Duchess of Kent Children’s Hospital at Sandy
Bay on a regular basis for carer training. The DK carer transportation subsidy sponsored by SRDC, lessened her financial burden and
allowed her to make regular hospital visits with ease. In the blink of an eye, Tung Tung’s mother had made significant progress and was
even able to take her on garden walks to enjoy some sunshine and fresh air.
After a stormy few years in hospital, we are looking forward to discharging Tung Tung back home this summer, where she will undoubtedly thrive, spend more time with family, attend school and make new friends!
